Live and act

Oscar Cullmann studied classical philology and Protestant theology at the University of Strasbourg , where he later also taught. From 1938 to 1972 he taught ancient church history and the New Testament at the University of Basel , of which he was also rector from 1968 to 1972. From 1948 he held additional professorships in Paris at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes, at the Faculté des Lettres of the Sorbonne and at the Faculté libre de Théologie Protestante in Paris. Cullmann's specialty was New Testament exegesis , the early Church, and salvation . He was particularly committed in the sense of ecumenism by emphasizing the fundamental similarities of the Christian churches and at the end of the 1950s he launched the idea of an ecumenical collection. As a Lutheran, he could also teach about Catholic theology without having to hide his denominational origins. He was received by three Popes ( Pius XII , John XXIII and Paul VI ) at a time when interdenominational dialogue was not yet sufficiently advanced for official contacts to be common at the highest level . To Pope Paul VI. Cullmann also maintained a personal friendship. On the basis of these contacts, Karl Barth once said : «On Mr. Cullmann's tombstone there will be written“ Friends of three Popes ””.

Cullmann was active in the World Council of Churches and took part as an observer at the Second Vatican Council at the personal invitation of the Papal Secretariat for the Promotion of Christian Unity and its President Augustin Cardinal Bea .

His students include Rudolf Bohren , Lukas Vischer , Felix Christ and Antonio Ambrosianio .
