Joachim Scharfenberg

Joachim Scharfenberg (born May 10, 1927 in Erfurt , † March 11, 1996 in Kiel ) was a German practical theologian , pastoral psychologist and psychoanalyst .

Live and act

Scharfenberg initially studied medicine, but after a few semesters switched to Protestant theology. It was founded in 1953 with a thesis on Johann Christoph Blumhardt Dr. theol. PhD. After his ordination as a Lutheran pastor, he took 1953/54 as one of the first Germans in a course in Clinical Pastoral Care ( Clinical Pastoral Education in part) in the US. He became a hospital chaplain in Berlin and at the same time trained as a psychoanalyst at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute . Since the beginning of the 1960s he was active in pastoral training and further education at the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg . In 1968 he completed his habilitation at the University of Tübingen with a thesis on Sigmund Freud and his criticism of religion as a challenge to the Christian faith .

In 1971 he was appointed to the chair for practical theology at Kiel Christian Albrechts University . As an academic teacher, university preacher at the University Church (Kiel) and as an author, he shaped generations of students. In addition to his teaching post, he continued to have a psychoanalytic practice. Pastoral care as a conversation and introduction to pastoral psychology and (together with Horst Kämpfer) Living With Symbols became standard works of his writings .

In 1972, Scharfenberg was one of the founders of the German Society for Pastoral Psychology (DGfP) and for over 40 years the editor of the magazine “ Paths to People” . In 1977 he was elected President of the Ferdinand Tönnies Society in Kiel, but gave up the post after a year for health reasons.
