The Ferdinand-Tönnies-Gesellschaft e. V. (FTG) was founded in Kiel in 1956 on the initiative of archivist Wilhelm Kähler . It is a non-profit registered association. According to the statutes, the company promotes student and working young people and civic education . As a scientific society, it is also devoted to dealing with the work of the sociologist and philosopher Ferdinand Tönnies (1855–1936), one of the founders of German sociology . Its president since 2010 has been Alexander Deichsel , who was elected to succeed the late Lars Clausen , while Ana Isabel Erdozáin acts as vice-president. Sebastian Klauke is the managing director.

On behalf of the FTG, the text-critical edition of his printed complete works has been published since 1998, the Ferdinand Tönnies complete edition in 24 volumes. The FTG also publishes the half-yearly magazine Tönnies-Forum and the publication series of the Ferdinand-Tönnies-Gesellschaft . It organizes lectures and specialist conferences such as the (so far ten) Tönnies Symposia (Kiel 1980, Kiel 1983, Kiel 1987, Klagenfurt 2004, Kiel 2005, Paris 2007, Husum 2011, 2013 and 2015, Kiel 2019).

At her domicile in Kiel- Schreventeich she runs a student residence , the Ferdinand Tönnies house .
