Hans Christian Knuth

Hans Christian Knuth (born September 6, 1940 in Greiz , Thuringia) is a German Lutheran theologian . He was from 1991 to 2008 bishop of the diocese Schleswig of the North Elbe Evangelical Lutheran Church .

Life

The son of a provost attended elementary school in Hamburg-Winterhude between 1946 and 1952 . In 1953 he was a student at the Johanneum School of Scholars in Hamburg . From 1954 to 1960 he was at the old grammar school in Flensburg . Then Knuth studied theology in Tübingen from 1960 to 1963. He studied philosophy in Zurich in 1963 and 1964 . He passed his exam in Kiel in 1964/65 . Between 1965 and 1968 he did his doctorate in Tübingen and Zurich. In July 2010, the Theological Faculty of Kiel University awarded him an honorary doctorate.

He completed his vicariate in Selent and Preetz in 1969/70 . From 1970 he was parish pastor at the Michaeliskirche in Kiel- Hassee for five years . In 1975 he became an advisor to the church leadership in Kiel and in 1979 switched to the preacher's seminary in Preetz as head of studies . From 1981 he worked as a senior church councilor in the department for fundamental theological issues of the Lutheran Church Office of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD). From 1985 to 1991 he worked as a pastor and provost in the church district of Eckernförde, which belongs to the Schleswig district . In 1991 he was elected bishop of the Schleswig district.

From 1994 to 1999 he was Catholica Commissioner of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (VELKD) and from 1999 to October 2005 he was the leading bishop of the VELKD . Since 2004 he has been chairman of the church leadership of the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church (NEK). Knuth served until September 30, 2008, when he retired. The regional synod of the NEK elected the previous provost Gerhard Ulrich as his successor .

He has been married to Sigrid Knuth-Baschek, a special education and language therapy teacher, since 1975. In 1979 his son was born. Knuth has an older brother and an older sister.
