Gerhard Müller (theologian)

Paul-Gerhard Müller (born May 10, 1929 in Marburg ) is a German Protestant theologian and former regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig .

Life

Müller attended school in Marburg an der Lahn, where he graduated from high school in 1948. He then studied Protestant theology in Marburg an der Lahn , Göttingen and Tübingen . During his vicariate from 1954 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. In 1956/57 he was pastor in Hanau and then worked for the German Research Foundation in Rome . In 1959 he became an assistant at the Ecumenical Seminar in Marburg an der Lahn. In 1960 he completed his habilitation for church and dogma history in Marburg. From 1966 he was visiting professor at the German Historical Institute in Rome. Finally he was appointed professor of historical theology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , where he taught for 15 years.

On February 19, 1982, the regional synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig elected him regional bishop and thus the successor to Gerhard Heintze . He took office on September 30th. A year later he became an honorary professor at the University of Göttingen . In the same year he took over the chairmanship of the Confederation of Protestant Churches in Lower Saxony for four years , before he was elected Deputy Leading Bishop and member of the church leadership of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD) in 1987 . After the term of office of Bishop Karlheinz Stoll , Müller succeeded him as the leading bishop of the VELKD in 1990.

In 1993, Müller announced that he would give up his office. The regional synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig therefore elected Christian Krause as his successor in November 1993 . His successor as leading bishop of the VELKD was Horst Hirschler (Hanover). In 2011, Müller was one of the signatories of an open letter that was written by several former bishops and spoke out against the amendment of the EKD Parish Service Act on the admission of homosexual couples in the rectory. The other signatories were Eduard Berger , Heinrich Herrmanns , Jürgen Johannesdotter , Werner Leich , Gerhard Maier , Theo Sorg and Ulrich Wilckens .

In addition to his role as regional bishop, Müller also held several honorary offices. From 1975 to 1983 he was President of the Luther Society . He was also a member of the Historical Commission of the German National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation , the Historical Commission for Hesse and the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz .

He is editor of the Andreas-Osiander -Werkausgabe and the Theologische Realenzyklopädie , currently the most extensive theological lexicon in German-speaking countries. Müller received an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Andrews in 1980 .

Müller has been married since 1957 and has two sons.
