Gerhard Maier (born August 30, 1937 in Ulm ) is a German Protestant theologian with a pietistic character and lawyer. From 1980 to 1995 he was rector of the Albrecht Bengel House and from 2001 to 2005 regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg .

Live and act

Gerhard Maier first studied law . He completed this degree with the first state examination in law. He then studied art history, but switched and studied Protestant theology . From 1966 to 1968 he was a research assistant at the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Tübingen . In 1969, as a student of Otto Michel, he received his doctorate in the New Testament subject with his dissertation on the subject of people and free will .

He spent his vicariate and first pastoral office from 1968 to 1973 in Baiersbronn in the Black Forest . He then became head of studies at the Albrecht Bengel House in Tübingen - Derendingen and was its rector from 1980 to 1995. From 1971 to 1977 and 1983 to 1995 he was a member of the Württemberg Evangelical Synod. He chaired the Church, Society, and Public Committee from 1983 to 1995. In 1995 he was elected prelate in Ulm to the prelature there and thus also a member of the upper church council. From October 7, 2001 to July 23, 2005 he was regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg. He returned his membership in the regional fraternity council of the Old Pietist Community Association and the chairmanship of the German Indian Pioneer Mission when he took up his office as bishop.

He teaches as a visiting professor at the state-independent Theological University of Basel in Riehen (Switzerland) and since 1991 at the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Heverlee / Leuven ( Belgium ). He is a board member in the Evangelical Press Association for Württemberg and in the working group for evangelical theology (AfeT) as well as a member of the board of trustees of the evangelical association ProChrist and a member of the university council of the International University of Liebenzell .

Private

Gerhard Maier is married to Gudrun Maier and has four sons. He lives in Tübingen - Derendingen .
