Hans von Keler (born November 12, 1925 in Bielitz, today Bielsko-Biała , Poland , † September 22, 2016 in Herrenberg ) was a Protestant theologian and regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg .

Live and act

Von Keler attended school in his Silesian homeland and was drafted for military service shortly before the end of World War II . He was briefly taken prisoner of war and after his release went to Stuttgart because a friend of his brother lived there. From 1946 he studied Protestant theology at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen , where he passed his first theological exam in 1950. Then he was vicar in Stuttgart and from 1953 pastor in Wildenstein (today Fichtenau parish). In 1957 he became head of the regional office of the Evangelical Girls' Union in Württemberg. In 1964 von Keler became pastor in Neuenstein and in 1969 he took over the management of the Evangelical Diakonie Sisterhood in Herrenberg .

In 1965 von Keler was elected to the 7th regional synod of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg. The MPs there elected him 2nd Vice-President. He was also a member of the Standing Committee from 1967 and of the Regional Church Committee from 1969. After the resignation of President Oskar Klumpp on October 17, 1968, von Keler was elected as his successor on January 20, 1969. He held this office until the end of the legislative period. He was also a member of the 8th regional synod from 1972, where he was a member of the standing committee and the regional church committee. Hans Eißler became the new president of the regional synod . In 1976 von Keler resigned from the synod because he became prelate of Ulm .

In 1979 von Keler stood for election as regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg. His two opposing candidates were his successor as regional bishop Theo Sorg and pastor Helmut Aichelin . Only after several ballots was von Keler elected on June 30, 1979, and in November he was appointed to his new office as regional bishop as the successor to Helmut Claß . Almost two years before the end of his regular term of office, von Keler announced in March 1987 that he would leave the office of regional bishop for spring 1988. He did not want to “impose” the election of a new bishop on the national synod to be elected in 1989. The regional synod therefore elected Theo Sorg as his successor on November 25, 1987.

In addition to his job as a pastor or regional bishop, von Keler also held several honorary positions. Since 1967 he has been a member of the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany , where he was part of the Presidium. Furthermore, he was chairman of the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg from 1976 , a member of the Lutheran World Federation since 1979 , at whose plenary assembly in Budapest in 1984 von Keler represented the Württemberg regional church and from 1988 to 1996 EKD commissioner for repatriate issues and issues of displaced persons.

Hans von Keler was married and had three children.
