Erich Eichele

Erich Eichele , (born February 26, 1904 in Stuttgart ; † June 11, 1985 ibid) was a German Protestant theologian and regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg .

Life and work

Erich Eichele attended the Prague School and the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Stuttgart as well as the Evangelical-theological seminars in Schöntal and Urach , where he passed his university entrance qualification. He then studied Protestant theology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He completed his studies with a doctorate to become a Dr. theol. from. Then he was vicar in Göttelfingen . In 1929 he went to America ( Hartford and New York ) for two years to study . Back in Germany, he briefly served as pastor in Villingen-Schwenningen and Kirchheim unter Teck , before moving to the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen in 1931 , where he trained young theologians. In 1934 Eichele became the third pastor at the collegiate church in Stuttgart and at the same time a consultant at the Evangelical High Church Council in Stuttgart. Here he rose himself up to the senior church council (1944). In 1951 Eichele was appointed prelate in Ulm to the local prelature by the church leadership of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg .

On February 26, 1962, Eichele was elected by the regional synod as successor to Martin Haug as regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg, and on March 30, 1962, he was appointed to his office by regional bishop Martin Haug. After completing his 65th birthday, Eichele retired in autumn 1969. The Württemberg regional synod then elected Helmut Claß as his successor .

Awards and honorary positions

In 1963 Eichele received an honorary doctorate from the Protestant theological faculty of the University of Tübingen ( D. theol. Hc ). In addition to his job as a pastor or regional bishop, Eichele also held several honorary positions. From 1959 to 1962 he was chairman of the Gustav-Adolf-Werk in Württemberg and from 1966 to 1969 chairman of the Working Group of Christian Churches in Germany (ACK). He also represented the Württemberg regional church at the general meetings of the Lutheran World Federation in 1952, 1957 and 1963 .
