The Albrecht Bengel House (ABH) is an evangelical study house for Protestant theology students at the University of Tübingen . It was named after the Pietist theologian Johann Albrecht Bengel .

history

The Albrecht-Bengel-Haus eV association was founded on December 27, 1969 by Pietists and conservative church groups in order to prevent crises of faith among students of Protestant theology . This should be achieved through intensive study support of the prospective theologians with regard to their understanding of the Bible, their spiritual community and the practical relevance of their studies.

In 1970 work began on converting a residential building in Tuebinger Gartenstrasse into a student dormitory with 11 rooms. The first director of studies was the dean of the church district of Heidenheim and a former pen republican, Walter Tlach , and the first honorary rector was the Tübingen missiologist Peter Beyerhaus .

Gerhard Maier Head of Studies 1973–1980, Rector 1980–1995

In 1973 Gerhard Maier , who later became the bishop of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg , became the director of studies. The increasing number of students soon led to an acute shortage of space. Therefore, part of the Karl-Heim-Haus (a student dormitory of the Protestant regional church) in the west of Tübingen was also rented. In the autumn of 1977 a new building in Tübingen-Derendingen with space for 76 students (“A-Bau” and “B-Bau”) was inaugurated. Gerhard Maier became rector of the ABH in 1980. In 1987, under his rectorate, an extension ("C-Building") was built in Ludwig-Krapf-Straße, so that the house comprised a total of 95 student rooms, three staff apartments, a large library, as well as seminar and office rooms.

From 1995 to 2009, Rolf Hille was Rector to succeed Gerhard Maier. Under Hille, another building was erected at the ABH (“D-Bau”) to promote doctoral theses and inaugurated in June 2009. In addition to four doctoral students' apartments, a prayer room, a seminar room and a lecture room, it also includes a cafeteria / meeting room. At the same time, the existing library with its workplaces was expanded into the former prayer room. On September 1, 2009, Rolf Sons took over the rectorate, followed by Clemens Hägele in September 2016. Since 2013, Rainer Riesner has been the successor to Rolf Hille, responsible for the doctoral thesis at the Albrecht Bengel House.

As a theological training center, the ABH is affiliated with the Evangelical Gnadauer Community Association. In the first 50 years, it provided professional and spiritual support for around 1,000 students.

Goal setting

BW

The house sees its main task in accompanying the almost 120 students. This study support is geared towards the aforementioned focal points of faithfulness to the Bible , community and community work : The Albrecht Bengel House represents a "biblical theology" as an alternative to the current historical-critical method and wants the students to develop and deepen their personal spirituality in their development to create conflict and team-minded personalities , to better understand culture and society and to prepare for future service in the church , school and mission .

Accordingly, the application for the study accompaniment includes the presentation of the "spiritual career" and the written commitment of the students to the principles of the house, including the divine authority and unity of the Bible as well as to wait with sexual intercourse until marriage in the sense of the chastity movement . All applicants must have a desire “to later serve the Church as pastor, preacher, teacher, or missionary,” according to the house's constitution.

organization

The students live in the house itself, in Tübingen or in the surrounding communities. The study support and living in the house are expressly not only available to theology students. A total of six teachers are currently supervising small student groups (so-called convents of around 15 to 25 students). The subjects dealt with in these conventions should adhere to a set curriculum. Two student house spokespersons supported the house management in organizational matters that affect the students. In addition, these house speakers should improve the coexistence of the students on the floors, whereby they are supported by a floor speaker on each floor. Clemens Hägele has been the head of administration and rector of the house since September 2016.

In addition to the apartments offered for students, doctoral candidates and guests, selected employees and students of the Church of Jesus Christ around the world are supported by an in-house ABH mission branch . This free missionary work is supported by donations from the circle of friends of the same name and a foundation of the same name .

The “brats”, as the students of this house call themselves, are in good contact with the “donors” of the Tübingen Evangelical Abbey , with whom a football game is played every semester (Stiftskick). In addition, every semester there is an alternating encounter with the Wilhelmsstift and the Evangelical Stift. A punt is also available to students.
