Cavit Orhan Tütengil

Cavit Orhan Tütengil (* 1921 in the village of Sebil in Tarsus , † December 7, 1979 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish sociologist and professor at Istanbul University . He was murdered by four gunmen in the street. Turkish right-wing extremists are held responsible for the crime .

biography

Tütengil was born in 1921 as the son of the Turkish Cypriot Ali Rauf Bey and Meryem Hanım from Tarsus. He was the oldest of five children. He had three brothers and a sister. Tütengil attended elementary school in the village of Ulaş, the middle school in Tarsus and graduated from Haydarpaşa high school in Istanbul by 1940.

He first attended the İstanbul Yüksek Öğretmen Okulu Teacher Training Center and then graduated from the Faculty of Literature at Istanbul University in 1944 and worked as a teacher in Antalya and Diyarbakır from 1944 to 1953 . He also worked as a teacher at village institutes in Aksu and Kepirtepe . In 1952 he married. The couple had a daughter and a son. Tütengil was sent to the UK for research for two years by the Ministry of Education .

In 1953 he began working as an assistant in sociology at the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University. He wrote his dissertation in 1954 on " Montesquieu's political and economic thoughts". In 1960 he became a docent and completed his habilitation in 1970. In his work on developmental sociology, he took a Kemalist point of view.

In addition to numerous articles that have been published in scientific journals, Tütengil commented for years on Turkish politics for the politically left- Kemalist daily Cumhuriyet .

On December 7, 1979, he was shot dead by four armed attackers on his way to the university. The perpetrators left a letter of confession calling for an independent Turkey and signed "anti-terrorist unit". The perpetrators were not caught. Thousands of people gave him the last escort, which took place under great security precautions.
