Burkhardt's main work is his three-volume ethics (4 parts), the specialty of which is that Burkhardt, inspired by Klaus Bockmühl , derives the “general ethics”, the standards of which apply to all people and which should therefore also be generally compatible, from the “specifically Christian Ethics ”, whose standards apply only to Christians, and in which the Christian community ( koinonia ), Christian prayer ( leiturgia ), Christian witness ( martyria ) and Christian service ( diakonia ) become topics of ethics. Heinrich Bedford-Strohm , at that time still professor for systematic theology and contemporary theological questions in Bamberg, critically examined Burkhardt's ethics in a review in the Theologische Literaturzeitung , but described the reading as worthwhile “far beyond the evangelical context of discussion, not only because B. . makes biblical insights fruitful for ethics in many places, but also because he successfully endeavors to broaden narrow horizons of belief and thought and still convey a clear basis for orientation. ”In addition to criticism of the content, Strohm praised that Burkhardt's ethics were suitable, that one may have from evangelical theology to be subjected to a critical examination.
