Theological Contributions is a Protestant theological and ecclesiastical journal and appears bimonthly. The main editors are Martin Reppenhagen and Reiner Braun on behalf of the Pastors' Prayer Association (PGB) . The publishing house is the evangelical SCM Brockhaus Verlag of the Christian Media Foundation .

history

In the 1960s, Rudolf Bultmann's theology prevailed, and it met with uncertainty and even rejection among conservative Protestant theologians. Conflicts began between his demythologizing theology and existential theology , which were shaped by theologians such as Martin Kähler , Adolf Schlatter and Julius Schniewind . Her presentations on this were initially incorporated into the publication “Brotherly Handouts”. From 1970, Klaus Haacker's initiative began to publish the magazine under its current name first quarterly and soon bi-monthly. The first editor was Otto Rodenberg. From 1970 to 2014 Helmut Burkhardt was co-editor. From 1972 to 1997, Theo Sorg was the next editor-in-chief as successor to Rodenberg. Otto Michel was replaced by Klaus Haacker, who shaped the magazine for over 30 years until 2007. This was followed by Heinzpeter Hempelmann (1997 to 2020) and Gerhard Hennig (1997 to his retirement in 2004), Michael Herbst (from 2007 to 2017), Reiner Braun since 2018 and from 2020 with Dean Martin Reppenhagen.

profile

The magazine tries to mediate the conversation between university theology and church practice. Their spiritual origins lie in the regional church pietism and the revival movement . The topics cover the entire spectrum of academic and practical theology, including the interpretation of the Bible , mission , questions of church history , ecclesiology such as ecumenism , evangelism , theological ethics (and in this context also questions such as abortion , medical ethics or dealing with practiced homosexuality ).

The structure always includes a biblical reflection, scientific essays, reports from church life and reviews . The authors are both pastors , such as the evangelical regional bishop emeritus Gerhard Maier , Bishop Abromeit or the Württemberg prelate Mack, as well as lecturers from the evangelical-theological faculties , such as Wolfgang Huber , Oswald Bayer , Rainer Riesner , Friedrich Beißer , Werner Neuer , Alister McGrath and Christoph Morgner (formerly also the late Martin Hengel ).

With a circulation of around 2,800 copies in 2020, the “Theological Contributions” are one of the highest-circulation theological journals in German-speaking countries.
