Friedrich Beißer (born January 8, 1934 in Ansbach ; † March 12, 2019 in Mainz ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

Friedrich Beißer grew up in Franconia . From 1953 to 1959 he studied Protestant theology at the ecclesiastical Augustana University in Neuendettelsau and at the universities of Erlangen and Heidelberg . From 1962 he was research assistant to Peter Brunner in Heidelberg for eight years . In the meantime, he received his doctorate on the claritas scripturae on November 6, 1964 in Erlangen and completed his habilitation on December 21, 1968 in Heidelberg with Peter Brunner with a thesis on the ideas of God with Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher . He was ordained in 1965 . From 1970 to 1976 he worked in Heidelberg, first as a university lecturer, then as an associate professor. In 1976 he was offered the chair for systematic theology in the theology department at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . For 24 years, until his retirement in 1999 , he shaped the students with a view to a solid knowledge of the Bible, knowledge of confessions and the perception of dogmatic responsibility in church practice. In addition to Lutheran theologians and subjects, he devoted himself in particular to Karl Barth's theology and questions of the sacraments .
