The Ambri Airport ( ICAO code LSPM ) is a Swiss airfield, which the general aviation serves. It is located near Ambrì in the municipality of Quinto TI . The airfield serves the surrounding region and is also home to a paragliding school and a helicopter base .
The airfield is located on the valley floor of the Leventina , a valley with steep flanks. The A2 motorway and the Ticino run to the north of the airfield, while the Gotthard railway line and the villages of Ambrì and Piotta are to the south .
history
The Ambrì-Piotta airfield was created during the Second World War as the base of the Swiss Air Force . The 8th season was based in Ambrì. EKW C-35 , Messerschmitt Bf 109 , de Havilland DH.100 Vampire , de Havilland DH.112 Venom and Hawker Hunter were stationed there.
The mountains surrounding the airfield contain an aircraft cavern where planes and troops were housed. The aircraft cavern could be reached via taxiways , which ran under the A2 and crossed the Ticino to end in the mountain.
In 1994 the air base was closed. Since then, the airport has been used for civilian purposes. The aircraft cavern still exists today; however, it is empty.
In the winter months, the runway is used as a car park for visitors to the Pista la Valascia , who attend an HC Ambrì-Piotta ice hockey game .
