from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werner Neuer (born May 6, 1951 ) is a German Protestant pastor . From 2000 to 2016 he was a lecturer in theology at the St. Chrischona Theological Seminary . He is considered an expert on the Swiss theologian Adolf Schlatter .

Career

Werner Neuer studied history , politics and geography at the University of Heidelberg from 1970 to 1972 and Protestant theology at the universities of Heidelberg and Tübingen from 1973 to 1977 . In 1985 he did his doctorate at the University of Marburg under CH Ratschow in the field of systematic theology . In 1989 the vicariate and ordination in the Württemberg regional church followed . From 1990–1997 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Mission Studies and Ecumenical Theology at the University of Tübingen, then theological consultant at the Württemberg regional church and completed pastoral training in Bad Urach.

From 2000 until his retirement in 2016 he lectured dogmatics , ethics , ecumenical theology , religious studies and theology of religions at the St. Chrischona Theological Seminary (TSC). He was also a guest lecturer at the Gustav Siewerth Academy in Bierbronnen and at the State-independent Theological University (STH) Basel. Neuer is the only Protestant who has been a permanent guest of Joseph Ratzinger's group of students since 2004 .

Neuer has been married since 1978, has seven children and lives in Schallbach near Lörrach .

Works

His extensive theological publications so far (2012) include over 200 articles on the history of theology, dogmatics, ethics, ecumenical theology and theology of religion. His great biography of Adolf Schlatter ( Adolf Schlatter. A Life for Theology and Church , 1996) became particularly well-known , with around 60 reviews that met with an unusually large and almost invariably positive response internationally and across denominations. A short biography of Schlatter, which was later translated into English (1995) and Korean (2002), was published eight years earlier. In total, Neuer dedicates around a quarter of his 200 published works to this Swiss theologian.

In the award-winning work Heil in all world religions? The understanding of revelation and salvation in the pluralistic theology of religion John Hicks (2009) shows Neuer the sometimes considerable contradictions in Hicks theory.

In his book Man and Woman in a Christian Perspective (1993), which has also been translated into English , he emphasizes the equality of man and woman, but also - against feminism - the essential difference between men and women as well as the leadership role of men and the rejection of the ordination of women .

Positions

Neuer is of the opinion that Christian marriage not only includes the mutual complementation and happiness of the partners, but also the conception of children. Pope Benedict XVI he welcomed 2005 as "a gift also to evangelical Christianity". In Catholic circles, Neuer is an opponent of artificial contraception and defender of the encyclical Humanae vitae from 1968 by Pope Paul VI. known. As a member of the “Initiativkreis Evangelisches Kirchenprofil” in Baden, he rejects the admission of practicing homosexuals to the Protestant pastoral office.
