Erich Geldbach (born February 1, 1939 in Marburg ) is a Baptist theologian and professor emeritus for ecumenism and denominational studies .

Life

Erich Geldbach spent his youth in Frankenberg , where he graduated from high school in 1960.

He studied Protestant theology and English at the University of Marburg . In 1966 he completed his studies with the first state examination for teaching at secondary schools. After a doctorate and legal clerkship , Geldbach passed the second state examination in 1971.

In 1975 he qualified as a professor for “Modern Church History and Ecumenical Theology”. After various teaching positions at the University of Kiel and Harvard , among others , he worked from 1981 to 1997 as a research assistant at the denominational institute of the Evangelical Federation in Bensheim . He was also an honorary professor at the University of Marburg .

From 1997 until his retirement he was professor for ecumenism and denomination at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Bochum . As a Baptist he does not belong to any member church of the EKD , the chair was rededicated.

research

The main focus of Geldbach's work was and is above all research into the various churches, denominations and special communities . These include his activities in the World Council of Churches, the Conference of European Churches and the Working Group of Christian Churches in Germany . In addition, Geldbach dealt with the Holocaust , evangelicalism and fundamentalism .

Geldbach was chairman of the Association for Free Church Research .
