Jörg Frey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg Frey (* 1962 in Freudenstadt ) is a German professor for the New Testament at the University of Zurich .

Life

Jörg Frey was socialized in a more pietistic milieu . He himself remarks: “The use of the Bible precedes the exegesis of the Bible . [...] The familiarity with and the love for biblical texts was, as it were, in my cradle through the imprint in the church youth work in my Württemberg homeland. "

Frey studied Protestant theology at the universities of Tübingen, Erlangen and Jerusalem. He initially experienced the scientific study of the Bible as unsettling, but then as a "great breadth and freedom". Martin Hengels lectures and seminars particularly appealed to him. In 1988 he passed the first theological exam in Tübingen and then worked as an assistant to Martin Hengel and Hermann Lichtenberger at the Institute for Ancient Judaism and Hellenistic Religious History at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen.

After the vicariate in the Württemberg regional church (1992/93) he passed the second theological exam. Frey received his doctorate in 1996 and qualified as a New Testament scholar in Tübingen in 1998. Professorships initially led him to the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

In 2003 Jörg Frey was ordained pastor of the Bavarian State Church .

Research & Teaching

Since April 1, 2010, he has held the chair for New Testament science with a focus on ancient Judaism and hermeneutics at the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich . He is also a Research Associate at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein .

Frey is internationally recognized as an important exegete of the Johannine writings. In the German-language commentary series Evangelical-Catholic Commentary on the New Testament (EKK) he is currently working on commenting on the Gospel of John. In addition to the Catholic letters, other research focuses are ancient Judaism ( Qumran , Apocalyptic ), Jewish Christianity and the literature of early Christianity.

In addition to its historical-philological character, Frey's research is characterized by a strong international connection and extensive editorial work. Among other things, Frey acts as the main editor of the renowned publication series Scientific Studies on the New Testament and as co-editor of the journal Early Christianity .
