Adolf Pohl (born February 13, 1927 in Berlin ; † December 10, 2018 in Buckow ) was a Baptist theologian. From 1964 to 1970 he was director of the theological seminar of the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches in the GDR .

Life

Adolf Pohl came from a Baptist pastor family. His father Paul Pohl, preacher in the Bethel congregation in Berlin Gubener Strasse, followed a call from the Baptist congregation of Altona in 1929 to the then still independent city on the Elbe.

After graduating from the Hamburg classical languages school Johanneum and private lessons in Hebrew Adolf Pohl studied from 1945 to 1947 three semesters Theology in makeshift lecture operation of Hamburg Evangelical Lutheran Church , the later Church University Hamburg . From 1947 to 1950 he studied theology at the German Baptist Seminary . Because of the total destruction of the Hamburg seminar building during the Second World War, study operations began in Wiedenest and from 1948 on again in Hamburg-Horn .

After completing his studies in 1950, Pohl answered "the call for help to take up a service in the 'Zone' where the 'GDR' had just been founded a year earlier" and became pastor of the Evangelical Free Church in Berlin-Lichtenberg . In 1957 he resigned from the community service because the Federal Administration East had appointed him editor of Wort und Werk , the monthly community magazine of the federal government in the GDR. He held this position until 1960.

Since the foundation of the theological seminar in Buckow (Märkische Schweiz) in 1959 , Pohl was director of studies there, director from 1964 to 1970 and lecturer in New Testament and systematic theology until 1991 . The great majority of the pastors trained in Buckow were shaped by Adolf Pohl's dogmatics lessons .

As a member of an international commission, in 1973 he was involved in the elaboration of the account of the faith , a common creed of the Baptist unions in the Federal Republic, the GDR, Austria and Switzerland. Pohl was a member of the GDR Federation in the Working Group of Christian Churches in the GDR .

After a visiting lecturer at the Theological Seminary in Hamburg , he retired in 1992.

Adolf Pohl is the author of various theological books, some of which have also been translated into Arabic and Portuguese. In the Wuppertal Study Bible series , he wrote comments on the Gospel of Mark , the Revelation of John , the Epistle to the Romans and the Epistle to the Galatians .

Adolf Pohl lived in Buckow (Märkische Schweiz) until his death. He had been married to Brigitte Pohl, nee Meie, since 1953. The marriage resulted in four sons.
