Christian Krause

Christian Krause (born January 6, 1940 in Dallgow-Döberitz ) is a Protestant theologian and former regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig, based in Wolfenbüttel .

Family and education

Krause studied Protestant theology from 1960 to 1966 in Marburg , Heidelberg , Chicago (Fulbright scholarship holder) and Göttingen . After his first theological exam he was research assistant in the theological department of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in Geneva (1966/1967) and then vicar of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover up to the second theological exam and ordination as a Lutheran pastor in 1969 in the Lutheran congregation in Geneva, Switzerland.

He has been married to the teacher and oboist Gertrud Krause since 1969; they have four children.

From 1969 to 1970 Christian Krause worked again at the Lutheran World Federation in Geneva, this time as research secretary. From 1971 to 1972 he worked in the leadership of the refugee service of the Lutheran World Federation in Dar-es-Salaam / Tanzania and in 1972 became senior church councilor in the Lutheran Church Office of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD) and the German National Committee of the LWF (DNK / LWB ) based in Hanover .

1985 followed nine years of activity as general secretary of the German Evangelical Church Congress based in Fulda , until he was elected regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig in 1994. During his tenure as regional bishop Christian Krause was appointed President of the LWF for the legislative period until 2003 at the general assembly of the LWF in Hong Kong in 1997, which prompted him to resign from the Braunschweig regional church at the beginning of his 63rd year in January 2002 in favor of End LWF Presidency.

Memberships

From 1999 to 2005 Krause was also the chairman of the supervisory board of the Evangelical Development Service (EED) based in Bonn and since 1995 he was a member and later vice-president of the Bad Harzburg Citizens' Foundation. Since 1995 he has also been a member of the board of the Hermann Art Foundation Promotion of New Testament text research .

From 2000 to 2007 Krause was President of the Luther Center in Wittenberg.

Awards and honors

  • 1994: Honorary doctorate from the Academy of Ecumenical Indian Theology and Church Administration , Madras, India
  • 1999: Honorary doctorate from the Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovak Republic
  • 2001: Large Cross of Merit with Star of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, awarded by Federal President Johannes Rau in Bellevue Palace , Berlin
  • 2006: Klaus Hemmerle Prize of the Focolare Movement , awarded in Aachen Cathedral (for his commitment as a bridge builder for ecumenism)
  • 2009: "Order of the Companions of OR Tambo " (first German holder of the highest South African order that can be bestowed on a foreigner), awarded by the South African President Kgalema Motlanthe in the government seat in Pretoria, Rep. South Africa
  • 2012: Appointed Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International for promoting better understanding and friendly relationships among the peoples of the world.
