Zoltán Káldy (born March 29, 1919 in Iharosberény , † May 17, 1987 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian Evangelical Lutheran theologian and bishop .

Life

Káldy was the son of an evangelical clergyman. After elementary school he attended the Protestant Lyceum in Sopron . From 1937 to 1941 he studied Protestant theology at the Protestant Faculty there . He was ordained a clergyman by Bishop Béla Kapi and sent to the Pécs parish, where he worked for eleven years. In addition, he held extremely effective evangelism events in at least 70 congregations . Between 1954 and 1958 he was also dean of the Tolna Baranya Church Province . After Lajos Ordass was eliminated in the bishopric elections in 1958 after the second ballot, he was chosen as the only candidate for bishop of the Protestant church district south. At the same time he became a clergyman of the Budapest Deák Square community. Until his death in 1987 he was at the head of the church district. His brothers in the church leadership were József Darvas and Ödön Szent-Ivány as inspectors of the church district. Since 1963 he represented the Hungarian Lutheran Church at the Lutheran World Federation . In 1967 he became the presiding bishop of his church. He resigned from the office of bishop when the 7th General Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation was held in Budapest in 1984, where he was elected chairman of the World Federation. The project of a " diaconal theology ", the new code of evangelical canon law , the new version of the agenda and the hymn book are linked to his name .

Káldy was one of the co-founders of the Christian Peace Conference in 1958 and was actively involved until it ended. Since 1965 he was also a member of the World Peace Council .

From 1971 he was a member of the 17th capital district for three terms. Since 1975 Káldy was a member of the National Council of the Patriotic Popular Front . Critics complained that he had justified the socialist social system with his office as bishop.
