Mark S. Hanson (born December 2, 1946 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American theologian. He was Senior Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) from 2001 to 2013 and President of the Lutheran World Federation from 2003 to 2010 .

Life

Hanson grew up in a Lutheran family in Minnesota. He finished his schooling at the Minnehaha Academy in 1964 and received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Augsburg College in 1968 .

Hanson was a Rockefeller Fellow at the Union Theological Seminary in 1968/69 . In 1972 he graduated as a Master of Divinity here . In 1973/74 he attended Luther Seminary in Saint Paul (Minnesota) . In 1979 he was awarded a Merril Fellowship to the theological faculty at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts .

After ordination in 1974, Hanson served as pastor at the Prince of Glory Lutheran Church in Minneapolis from 1973 to 1979. From 1979 to 1988 he was a pastor at the Community Lutheran Church in Edina, Minnesota and from 1988 to 1995 Hanson was a pastor at the Lutheran University Church in Minneapolis.

In 1995 he was elected Bishop of the Regional Synod of Saint Paul of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). In 2001 Hanson was re-elected.

From 1988 to 2000, Hanson was President of the Minnesota Christian Churches Association and Vice-Chair of the ELCA Bishops' Conference. The General Synod (Churchwide Assembly) of the ELCA elected him full-time leading bishop in 2001; its official seat is at the church office of the ELCA in Chicago .

In 2003, Hanson was elected President of the Lutheran World Federation as the successor to Christian Krause , a position he held until the end of the LWF General Assembly in Stuttgart in 2010, in addition to his role as Senior Bishop of the ELCA.

Hanson is a board member of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA . In 2007, Hanson was confirmed in office for a further six years. In 2013, Elizabeth A. Eaton was elected as his successor (taking office on November 1).

Hanson is with Ione, geb. Agrimson who works as a social worker. They have six children (the four eldest are adopted): Aaron, Alyssa, Rachel, Ezra, Isaac and Elizabeth.
