Elizabeth A. Eaton

Elizabeth A. Eaton (born April 2, 1955 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American Lutheran bishop. She is the Senior Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Eaton studied at the College of Wooster , where she received a bachelor's degree in music education, and Harvard Divinity School , where she graduated with a Master of Divinity . After ordination in 1981, she worked in ELCA wards in Worthington, Ohio , Youngstown, Ohio, and Ashtabula until she took office as Bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of the ELCA in January 2007 . On August 14, 2013, she was elected Senior Bishop of the ELCA's Churchwide Assembly . She prevailed against the previous incumbent Mark Hanson with 600 to 287 votes . She took up the position of Senior Bishop on November 1, 2013. On August 6, 2019, she was re-elected for another six years.

Eaton is married to Conrad Selnick, an Episcopal priest of the United States , and has two daughters with him.
