Loreley summer toboggan run

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The summer toboggan run Loreley or the Loreley-Bob (own name of the operator) is a summer toboggan run on the plateau of the Loreley rock . Due to its location in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley , the existence of the railway repeatedly leads to discussions about tourism and cultural and nature conservation . In addition to the largest density of castles in the world in the Middle Rhine Valley , the Loreley rock , known from legends and German folk songs, is one of the most internationally known tourist attractions on the Rhine .

The Loreley bobsleigh is located above the Loreley visitor center near Sankt Goarshausen and the associated open-air stage . The summer toboggan run is of the tub toboggan run type with a tub made of stainless steel sheet . The descent is approx. 700 meters long, the upward transport is carried out by a lifter system , in which the vehicles with the tobogganers are pulled to the start by a steel cable running under the track. The manufacturer is the Hessian company Wiegand, the system is operated by Loreley-Bob GmbH . The construction costs for the cableway, which opened on May 17, 2013, amounted to 750,000 euros. The special location and the historical architectural style of the Loreley buildings had to be taken into account during construction.

history

Even before the opening, there were several years of discussions between politicians, citizens and environmentalists of the BUND , who even brought legal proceedings against the building. The BUND's urgent application against the building permit was rejected by the Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Administrative Court at the beginning of February 2013. The planning of the summer toboggan run cost 60,000 euros and the construction 750,000 euros. On the one hand, there were concerns that the one kilometer long stretch across a meadow would endanger the natural environment. On the other hand, UNESCO is bothered by the construction, since the Upper Middle Rhine Valley has had World Heritage status since 2002. The toboggan run cannot be seen from the Rhine Valley. Nevertheless, on June 19, 2013 in Phnom Penh, UNESCO called for the dismantling of the railway at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee.

According to the local gastronomy and the mayor, the number of visitors to the place, especially families, has increased since the opening of the railway. There were fears beforehand that the facility could impair the experience of nature and limit the number of visitors.

It has not yet been decided whether the summer toboggan run will continue to exist (as of August 2013), but the operator is referring to a valid building permit. The summer toboggan run is currently in operation. (As of April 2018)
