The open-air stage Loreley is an open-air stage near Sankt Goarshausen , Rhineland-Palatinate, not far from the Loreley rock.

history

The Turner Labor Service began work on the Loreley open-air theater in 1932. The stage was originally intended for the Rhein-Main-Spielring , but this building project was taken over by the National Socialists in the following year and rededicated as the "NS celebration site" and the " Thing site ". The Frankfurt architect Hermann Senf received the order for this building. On the evening of April 30, 1934, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was held by Gauleiter Sprenger during a ceremony accompanied by two music bands from the Reich Labor Service and choirs . The construction work lasted until 1939 and was carried out by members of the labor service.

The audience around the open-air stage had 4,300 seats and 10,000 to 14,000 standing places. To the right and left of the entrance there was a statue of a “laborer” and an eagle. The torso with the claws and wings as well as the neck of the eagle are today on the grounds of the gymnastics and youth home. Rumor has it that the missing head was taken to France by the French soldiers. The statue of the "workman" is missing, it was probably destroyed.

On June 21, 1939, Reich Governor Jakob Sprenger solemnly set the keystone. A first performance of Wilhelm Tell took place just three days later . The stage was not only intended for theater events, but was also intended to serve as a backdrop for major party events. In the years of the war and further up to 1968, theater classics, including plays by Schiller , Goethe and Shakespeare, were preferred on the stage, which has remained virtually unchanged to this day .

Since 1976, rock and pop concerts have also been held on the Loreley open-air stage. The first rock concert was on July 3, 1976 Genesis . From 1981 the Rockpalast took place several times on the open-air stage. Many well-known artists performed, including BAP , Barclay James Harvest , Bob Dylan , Joe Cocker , Die Toten Hosen , Böhse Onkelz , Herbert Grönemeyer , Peter Maffay , Marillion , Metallica , Gary Moore , Chris Rea , Frankie Miller , Eric Burdon , Lynyrd Skynyrd , Rory Gallagher , Udo Jürgens , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Carlos Santana , Paul Simon , Simple Minds , Sting , The Police , The Sisters of Mercy , UB40 , REM , The Kelly Family , U2 , Journey , Toto and Whitesnake .
