Journey is an American rock band that has sold over 75 million records in its 40-year career.

Band history

First phase (1973–1987)

The band was founded in 1973 in San Francisco by the two former Santana members Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie . The formation was completed by Ross Valory, Prairie Prince and George Tickner.

Prince left the band before the completion of the first LP and was replaced by Aynsley Dunbar. After the release of the debut album Journey in 1975, Tickner also left the group. Neal Schon took over the guitar work alone. The first album, and also the next two releases, Look into the Future (1976) and Next (1977), were characterized by long instrumental passages and a slightly progressive touch, interspersed with subtle references to the former employer Santana. However, the formation was denied commercial success and the decision was made to present itself more accessible in the future. For this purpose, the singer Robert Fleischman was hired to share the vocals with Rolie. However, the collaboration did not bring the hoped-for success and after the separation from Fleischman, the young singer Steve Perry was engaged. His participation was clearly noticeable on the next album Infinity (1978). The band presented itself more song-oriented and was able to book a first hit with the single Wheel in the Sky . Perry's excellent singing was particularly noticeable in the ballad- oriented parts of the album and would develop into one of the band's trademarks in the following years. Dunbar left Journey after this album and was replaced by Steve Smith.

The two following albums Evolution (1979) and Departure (1980) moved stylistically on similar territory and gave the band some hits, such as Lovin 'Touchin' Squeezin ' or Any Way You Want It . The live album Captured (1981) ended the era of Gregg Rolie, who devoted himself to his solo career. Jonathan Cain (keyboards), who previously worked for the babies, joined the group as a new member. This reshuffle was accompanied by another stylistic reorientation. The rock elements faded into the background and make room for ballad-like moments, which were particularly evident in the compositions by Perry and Cain. The rest of the band members were initially suspicious of this change, but when this reorientation proved to be successful, they gave in.

The 1981 album Escape topped the Billboard 200 and became the band's most successful work to date. It contains numerous top ten hits, such as Don't Stop Believin ' , Who's Crying Now or Open Arms .

Journey successfully toured and released the album Frontiers in 1983 , which was successfully placed in the charts. Separate Ways and Faithfully became single hits. After an extensive tour, the band took a break. During the recording of the album Raised on Radio (1986), Valory and Smith had to leave the band at the request of Perry, who more and more determined the fate of the band. Her work in the studio and on the subsequent tour was taken over by studio musicians . After the end of the tour there was a break and the band broke up. Cain and Schon formed Bad English together while Perry pursued a solo career.

In 1983 they were namesake and also cartoon characters of the arcade game Journey by Bally Midway .

Reunification & Steve Augeri phase (1996-2007)

In 1996 there was a reunion in the classic line-up Perry, Schon, Cain, Valory and Smith and the album Trial by Fire . The band could not quite build on their old successes in the changed music landscape, but made the jump into the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and recorded a single hit with When You Love a Woman . The album was to be promoted with a tour, but Perry injured himself shortly before the start of the tour and was incapacitated for months. The remaining members were dissatisfied with the situation and decided to continue without Perry in order to be able to continue touring. The singer Steve Augeri was hired for Perry , who had already made a name for himself with Tall Stories and Tyketto and who vocally reminded of Perry. The voluntarily departing drummer Smith was replaced by Deen Castronovo, who already played with Cain and Schon at Bad English . The band sent a first sign of life with a contribution to the soundtrack of the film Armageddon .

In 2001, Arrival was followed by the first full album with Augeri. For the first time in history, Journey resorted to the help of outside songwriters, but the band still failed to match previous successes. Disappointed about the lack of promotion for the album, the band separated from their record company Sony Music , with which they had worked for over 25 years. With Red 13 (2002) the band released for the first time on their own and presented five new songs that did not differ much from the Arrival material, but were produced a little rougher.

Journey continued to play concerts in the United States on a regular basis , but took a break from publishing. At this time he was planning another project with Sammy Hagar , which was to operate under the name Planet Us . His old companion Deen Castronovo was earmarked for the drummer position, while Michael Anthony, known from Van Halen , was earmarked for the bassist. The project met for a short recording session, but Hagar and Anthony had to refrain from further activities shortly afterwards, as they had committed to a tour with Van Halen. Already found a replacement with singer Jeff Scott Soto (Talisman) and bassist Marco Mendoza ( Whitesnake , Thin Lizzy ). The project now traded under the name Soul Sirkus and recorded his first album on his own in 2004, entitled World Play . Castronovo had to struggle with alcohol problems during this phase and was replaced by the studio musician Virgil Donati on drums. Before the album was released in Europe and Japan, all drum tracks were re-recorded by him. Soul Sirkus played a few concerts in the US and Europe. In the meantime, Journey singer Steve Augeri was working on pieces for a possible solo album. When he presented some ideas to Neal Schon, he was immediately enthusiastic and saw it as an impulse to record a new Journey album. The band went into the studio and, for the first time since the successful Escape / Frontiers days, resorted to the help of producer Kevin Elson. This helped the band to find their old strengths with the album Generations , both in terms of the song material and the stylistic direction. For the first time, all five band members took part in the singing, although most of the material was still voiced by Augeri. Especially the freshly cured Castronovo impressed with unimagined vocal power and reminded strongly of the retired Steve Perry with his phrasing.

In 2006 Journey returned to Europe after more than 20 years. They played successfully at festivals like in Lichtenvoorde ( Netherlands ) or at Sweden Rock . Steve Augeri acted as singer. On the subsequent US tour with Def Leppard , Jeff Scott Soto stepped in for Augeri, who had suffered from the vocal cords. In December, the final separation from Augeri was announced. Soto became the band's permanent vocalist. In the spring of 2007 Journey came back to Europe. The tour took her to the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Spain.

New success with Arnel Pineda (since 2007)

On June 12, 2007, Journey announced the split from Jeff Scott Soto. From November 2007 the band worked on new songs with the help of producer Kevin Shirley. Filipino singer Arnel Pineda, who was officially introduced as a new band member in December 2007 and was discovered by guitarist Neal Schon on YouTube as the singer of a Journey tribute band, was now responsible for the vocals. The first album with Pineda as vocalist, Revelation , was released in June 2008. The second is called Eclipse and has been on the market since May 2011. In 2011 and 2013 Journey came to Germany as part of a European festival tour, where they performed at the two-day “Rock the Nation” and “Hirock” festivals, among others. a. also on the Loreley, as headliners (e.g. with Foreigner or Whitesnake).

As part of Typhoon Haiyan , singer Arnel Pineda, who himself comes from Manila , ensured that Journey, together with her concert agency Live Nation Entertainment , the nearby company Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and her manager John Baruck, donated more than 350,000 US dollars, to provide food in the crisis region. They also called on their fans to donate themselves to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) agency .

In 2014 there were several rumors that Arnel Pineda wanted to leave the band and Steve Perry would return to the band. However, this was denied by all sides. The reason for this was an interview statement by Perry that he was trying to make music with Neal Schon, but this was difficult. However, this did not happen as part of Journey

In 2015 Deen Castronovo was replaced by Omar Hakim for several concerts as he was imprisoned for domestic violence. Gun possession and sexual abuse were also charges. Castronovo announced during the tour that he had already been fired from the band. He apologized for his actions and announced a drug withdrawal. As part of this, the band announced the reunion with Steve Smith.

In December 2016, Journey was honored with the induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . The official event for this was on April 7, 2017.

In March 2020, the band announced the separation of Steve Smith and Ross Valory in connection with a lawsuit for damages against both musicians.
