Omar Hakim (* 12. February 1959 in New York City , New York ) is an American jazz - drummer .

Career

Hakim started playing the drums at the age of five. He jammed very early on with his childhood friend Marcus Miller , who later became world famous. Hakim played as a drummer a. a. at Joe Zawinul's Weather Report and for Sting . He also played for David Bowie and Dire Straits on their million-seller Brothers in Arms .

As a renowned user of electronic drum sets ( Roland ), for which he made advertising tours around the world , he was even able to secure an engagement with the pop divas Madonna , Mariah Carey and Celine Dion . Since 1996 he has played with Nile Rodgers at Chic .

He has also continued to develop his jazz fusion skills and has played drums with Miles Davis , George Benson , Marcus Miller, John Scofield , Victor Bailey and Lee Ritenour .

In 1989 he released his first album Rhythm Deep , on which he also demonstrated his singing skills and which was nominated for a Grammy Award . His second solo album entitled The Groovesmith from 2000 is characterized by the use of his own Macintosh ProTools.

In 2014 he was part of the band in the concert series Before the Dawn by Kate Bush .
