Victor Bailey (born March 27, 1960 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ; † November 11, 2016 ) was an American jazz musician who gained fame primarily as an electric bass player , but also mastered the double bass .

Life

Bailey comes from a family of musicians; his father Morris Bailey Jr. was a saxophonist and songwriter. Bailey first played drums before switching to bass. He studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston , where he also played the double bass . After touring with Hugh Masekela , he moved to New York City, where he worked with Sonny Rollins , Miriam Makeba , Lenny White , Don Alias, and Larry Coryell . In 1982 he replaced Jaco Pastorius in the jazz fusion band Weather Report .

Since 1987 he has worked as a touring and studio musician with Joe Zawinul , Steps Ahead , David Gilmore , Sting , Madonna , Mike Stern , Bill Evans , Michael Brecker , LL Cool J and Lady Gaga, among others . From 1989 he also presented albums under his own name.

Bailey, who was a professor at Berklee College of Music until 2015, died on November 11, 2016 at the age of 56. He has had Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease for 25 years .
