Mitchel Forman

Mitchel Forman (born January 24, 1956 in Brooklyn ) is an American keyboard player of fusion and modern jazz .

Life

Forman had classical piano lessons from the age of seven. As a teenager he played in rock bands, and then in the big band of Clem DeRosa to work. At the age of 17 he began studying music for three years at the Manhattan School of Music . After graduating from 1978, he initially accompanied Gerry Mulligan , with whom he also went on tour, and from 1981 Stan Getz . In 1980 he appeared as a soloist at the Newport Jazz Festival and then toured with Phil Woods , Carla Bley , Mel Tormé and Astrud Gilberto . From 1984 he belonged to the bands of John McLaughlin ( Mahavishnu , Adventures in Radioland ) and Wayne Shorter , ( Phantom Navigator ).

In 1985 he founded his own band, but also worked with John Scofield ( Blue Matter ), Mike Stern ( Upside Downside ), Janis Siegel , Dave Samuels , Joe Beck , Danny Gottlieb , Diane Schuur , Gary Burton ( Reunion ), Pat Metheny , Simon Phillips , Freddie Hubbard , Bill Evans or Rickie Lee Jones . Forman released Now & Then, a tribute album to Bill Evans in 1992 , which received great critical acclaim. In 1994 he founded the fusion band Metro together with Chuck Loeb , which repeatedly traveled internationally and released six albums, all of which received critical acclaim. The quartet with Wolfgang Haffner on drums and Mel Brown on bass tours Europe every year. Forman currently (2014) lives primarily in Southern California.

In recent years Forman has released his own label Marsis Jazz albums under his own name. He also worked with Dino Betti van der Noot , Eric Marienthal , Andy Summers , Rick Braun , Jeff Golub, Andrea Marcelli , Diane Schuur , Mark Egan , Dave Samuels and Virgil Donati .
