Mark Egan

Mark McDaniel Egan (born January 14, 1951 in Brockton , Massachusetts ) is an American jazz bassist and composer.

life and work

Egan first played the trumpet in high school and switched to the electric bass, his main instrument, at the age of 14. He studied at the University of Miami (with Jerry Coker ) and privately with Jaco Pastorius , his musical role model. In 1976 he went to New York City with his own band (with fellow students from Miami, including Hiram Bullock ) , where he accompanied the Pointer Sisters and David Sanborn , among others . From 1977 to 1980 he was a member of the first Pat Metheny Group with Danny Gottlieb - he knew Metheny from their school days together. From 1982 he was co-leader of the successful group "Elements" with Danny Gottlieb, with whom he often played in a duo. As a studio musician, Egan can be heard as a sideman on numerous albums, including with Joe Beck , Bill Evans , Stan Getz ( Billy Highstreet Samba ), Alex de Grassi , Lew Soloff and Mike Stern as well as with singer / songwriters outside of the jazz and rock context like Marc Cohn and Sophie B. Hawkins . He also played with the Gil Evans Monday Night Orchestra for thirteen years ; In 1983, 1984 and 2000 he was a member of the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band . In 1985, "Mosaic", his first album as a leader, was released on Windham Hill Records . He teaches, has his own studio, founded the label "Wavetone Records" in 1992 and composes music for film and television.
