Jerry Coker
Jerry Coker (* 28. November 1932 in South Bend (Indiana) ) is an American jazz - clarinet , tenor saxophonist , author and university lecturer
Jerry Coker graduated from Indiana University ; he also played tenor saxophone in the Fred Dale Big Band in the early 1950s. In 1953 he interrupted his studies to become a member of Woody Herman's orchestra . During this time he also played in the Nat Pierce / Dick Collins nonet and in the formation The Herdsman with Cy Touff and Ralph Burns (1954), then in the Mel Lewis septet (1956) and with other music from West Coast jazz ; he also worked as a freelance musician. In the second half of the 1950s, the first recordings were made under his own name in Bloomington (Indiana) , San Francisco and Paris.
In the early 1960s he continued his studies; In the mid-1960s he returned to Indiana University as a lecturer and worked in the jazz field. In 1976/77 he directed the Duke Jazz Ensemble at Duke University . He later also taught at the University of Miami , North Texas State University, and the University of Tennessee . He wrote several books on improvisation, jazz keyboard and jazz history. His students included u. a. Mark Egan , Don Rader and Mark Taylor .
