Donald Arthur "Don" Rader (born October 21, 1935 in Rochester (Pennsylvania) ) is an American trumpeter and arranger of modern jazz .

Rader comes from a musical family; From the age of five he had lessons from his father, a trombonist. He was a member of college bands before becoming a musician in the Navy . He then studied at Sam Houston State University and with Jerry Coker ; from 1959 he worked for Woody Herman ( Woody's Winners ), from 1961 to 1963 for Maynard Ferguson and Count Basie (1963/64). He then played in New York City and moved to Los Angeles in 1966 , from where he continued to work as arranger for these band leaders, but also for Louis Bellson , Harry James , Terry Gibbs , Frank Foster and Stan Kenton , and between 1967 and 1972 for Les Brown was active. In the 1970s, in addition to working in the studio, he also led his own formations. In 1983 and 1984 he was a member of Erwin Lehn's orchestra and also worked for Rudi Fuesers ' “ Connexion Latina ”. From Los Angeles he worked for other European radio orchestras, for Charlie Shoemake and for Thomas Stabenow . In the late 1980s, he toured Europe with Wilson de Oliveira . In the next few years he also worked as a guest soloist for German big bands . The precise lead trumpeter was also involved in recordings by Ella Fitzgerald , Don Menza , Bill Holman , Peter Herbolzheimer , Frank Sinatra and Manhattan Transfer ; he has also arranged for Toshiko Akiyoshi , Buddy Rich and Ed Shaughnessy . He has lived in Sydney since 1994 , where he taught at the Sydney Conservatory of Music . He has also taught at the University of Redlands , the Cerritos Conservatory , Christchurch and Wellington .
