Thomas Stabenow (born September 11, 1952 in Kirchberg an der Jagst ) is a German modern jazz bassist .

Live and act

Stabenow first played the piano and then began playing clarinet in Dixieland bands. At the age of 21 he switched to the double bass and studied music education at the University of Music in Stuttgart . He first played with the “Ulm Jazz Quintet”, the “Crew” of Frédéric Rabold and formations around Lauren Newton , Johannes Faber and Bernd Rabe . He was involved in Bernd Konrad's exceptional album "Traumtänzer" (1980) with Hans Koller , but also recorded with Joe Haider , Klaus Weiss and Joe Kienemann . In the 1980s he founded his own group in which Kenny Wheeler , Roman Schwaller , Christof Lauer , Andy Scherrer , Lee Konitz , Mel Lewis and Makaya Ntshoko played. He also worked for Erwin Lehn and in the studio, from 1986 for Peter Herbolzheimer's "Rhythm Combination & Brass". There were concerts and recordings with Stan Getz , Eartha Kitt , Chaka Khan , Al Jarreau , Charlie Mariano , David Friedman and Dianne Reeves . In 1988 he was one of the founders of the "Munich Jazz Orchestra". He continued to record with Frank Foster , Bill Ramsey , Ludwig Nuss , Florian Poser , Larry Porter , Jürgen Seefelder , Jörg Widmoser , Johannes Enders and with Bernd Konrad's project "Südpool". He appears in a duo formation with the pianist Volker Engelberth .

From 1984 Stabenow worked as a lecturer at the Stuttgart University of Music, before teaching as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim from 1996 to 2018 . In 1988 he published the "1st German Real Book". Since 1987 he has been producing his projects on his own label "Bassic Sound", but also recordings with Benny Bailey , Rachel Gould , Thomas Faist , the NDR Bigband and others. a.

Prizes and awards

In 1986 Stabenow was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize . The laudation said: “With great versatility, it is stylistically connected to the swinging mainstream of jazz. As a band leader, in his serving unspectacular manner, he forms a lively focus for many musicians in southern Germany. ”In 1999 he received the sponsorship award from the city of Munich.
