Bernd Konrad (born July 20, 1948 in Dammfleth ) is a German jazz musician ( baritone saxophone , soprano saxophone , clarinet ) and composer.

Live and act

After studying clarinet, electronic music and composition at the Hochschule für Musik Stuttgart , he worked as a composer for radio and television on the one hand, and on the other hand played with Herbert Joos , Hans Koller and Adelhard Roidinger , occasionally with Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz , and later on as well with Benny Golson , Hannes Zerbe or the Sam Rivers Big Band . With Perry Robinson , Theo Jörgensmann , Hans Kumpf , Michel Pilz and the rhythmists Günter Lenz and Peter Giger he formed the Clarinet Contrast from 1975 to 1977 . In the last 15 years he has performed in particular with the SüdPool project.

In 1983 he wrote the third stream composition “The Whale” for Erwin Lehn and his Südfunk -Orchester ; in the same year, in collaboration with the composer Klaus Hinrich Stahmer, the ballet music "Die Nashörner" (based on Ionesco) was created for the Oldenburg State Theater; In 1986 his composition “ Marilyn ” was premiered with the singer Lauren Newton with the Bodensee Symphony Orchestra and his own jazz ensemble. In 1995 he wrote a Billie Holiday- related composition on lynching under the title Strange Fruit . In 2004 his "Stepping Stone - I Have a Dream" for large orchestra, big band and soloists, especially the singer Greetje Bijma, followed .

In 1981 he founded the Baden-Württemberg Youth Jazz Orchestra with Jiggs Whigham , which he directed until mid-2013.

Since 1986 he has held the professorship for popular music and jazz at the Stuttgart University of Music and worked there until 2012; Since 1997 he has been the successor of Erwin Lehn and has also led the big band there, which he himself co-founded in 1974 as part of a student initiative.

In 1981 Konrad received the Jazz Prize of the then Südwestfunk and in 1983 he was named "Musician of the Year" for Jazz magazine . In 2001 he received the Federal Cross of Merit . Woody Allen is also an admirer of his works , who in his film Hannah and Her Sisters alludes to the Konrad LP Dream Dancer. In 2018 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize for his life's work.
