Hans Kumpf

Hans Kumpf (born June 8, 1951 in Stuttgart ) is a German jazz clarinetist , author and photographer.

After graduating from high school, Kumpf first studied with Helmut Lachenmann at the Ludwigsburg University of Education and attended the international courses for new music in Darmstadt ; He also completed jazz courses in Remscheid , with Erwin Lehn , Albert Mangelsdorff and Johnny Griffin . In 1972 he presented himself with the group AK Musick at the German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt . In 1975 Wolfgang Dauner brought him to a production of the Radio Jazz Group Stuttgart, which he directed, with Louis Moholo and Irène Schweizer ; In 1976 he released a duo record with Perry Robinson and played with Theo Jörgensmann's Clarinet Contrast project . Then he played with John Fischer in Moscow, Zurich and Le Mans. In 1979 he performed in New York City with Perry Robinson. Since 1980 he has repeatedly visited Russia, where he worked with avant-garde musicians. He also worked with Harry Tavitian and Jürg Solothurnmann . In 1990 he was in Indonesia with the Baden-Württemberg Youth Jazz Orchestra .

In addition to solo appearances, he works with bassists Jan Jankeje and Vitold Rek . With his wife Katarzyna Kumpf he also organizes jazz and poetry concerts with Polish poetry.

In a book published in 1976, Kumpf analyzed the relationship between post-serial music and free jazz (2nd edition 1981) and also published several status analyzes in jazz research . He writes regularly for magazines such as the Jazz Podium and has also emerged as a jazz photographer.
