Anatoly Petrovich Vapirov

Anatoly Petrovich Wapirow (also Anatoly Vapirov ; Russian Анатолий Петрович Вапиров * 24. November 1947 in Berdyansk ) is a Russian jazz - clarinetist , saxophonist and composer .

Wapirow studied composition and clarinet at the Leningrad Conservatory, later also saxophone, and worked there until 1982 as a teacher of jazz music. He has been playing jazz since the late 1960s and was one of the most important representatives of modern jazz in the Soviet Union in the 1970s, where he appeared with Sergei Kurjochin , Vladimir Volkov , Vyacheslav Gajworonski , Valentina Ponomarjowa and Tomasz Stańko , among others .

In 1981 Vapirov was arrested and sent to prison. Secretly produced recordings of his compositions from this period were smuggled abroad and appeared in England under the title Sentenced to Silence . In 1985 he emigrated to Bulgaria. There he directed the Varna Summer International Jazz Festival from 1992 to 2005 ; he also worked in a duo with Harry Tavitian . Wapirow recorded more than 60 LPs and CDs and composed several large symphonic works in addition to jazz music. His composition The Black Sea Project was performed in 2006 with the Varna Symphony Orchestra at the 15th Warna Summer International Jazz Festival.
