Vladimir Alexandrovich Volkov

Vladimir Alexandrovich Volkov , also Vladimir Volkov ( Russian Владимир Александрович Волков * 28. November 1960 in Leningrad ) is a Russian jazz bassist and important East-European representative of Free Jazz .

Volkov became known as a partner of Vjacheslav Guyvoronsky in the Leningrad Duo (or St. Petersburg Duo ), with whom he recorded several albums. He played in Wieland Kuyken's Collegium Europe and The Moscow Composers Orchestra . In the 1990s he became a member of the multicultural project Vershki da Koreshki , which includes pianist and accordionist Alexei Levin from Russia and singers Mola Sylla from Senegal and Kaigal-ool Khovalyg from Tuva.

In 1998 he worked alongside Enver Izmailov , Harry Tavitian , Anatoly Vapirov and Stoyan Yankoulov on the Black Sea project , which was organized for the Leipzig Jazz Festival. He then worked with Arkady Shilkloper and Sergey Starostin from the Moscow Art Trio as well as with Sainkho Namtchylak and Vladimir Tarasov .

In 1999 he went on a European tour with the group Vershki da Koreshki and the Norwegian singer Mari Boine . To award the title of European Capital of Culture to the city of Graz in 2003, he took part in an east-west project . In the same year he was one of the founders of The New East Quartet (with Tomasz Stańko ), which presented itself at the Barbican Center in London .

Volkov's youngest bands are the Volkov Trio (with Sergey Starostin) and the Baltic Quartet , to which Bobo Stenson , Petras Vyšniauskas and Klaus Kugel belong.
