Enwer Ismailow (also Enver Ismailov or Izmailov ; Ukrainian Енвер Серверович Ізмайлов Enwer Serwerowytsch Izmailov ; * 1955 in Fergana , Usbekische SSR ) is a Ukrainian folk and jazz - guitarist . The son of a Crimean Tatar family who had been forcibly relocated from the Crimean peninsula ( Ukraine ) to Uzbekistan returned to Crimea in 1989.

Ismailov does not pluck the strings, but only uses jazz tapping , a special technique of the electric guitar : the fingertips of both hands tap the strings on the fingerboard, with movements similar to those when striking the piano keys. Without knowing from American colleagues like Stanley Jordan in particular , he developed this technique independently and at the same time or even earlier to an astonishing maturity.

Enwer Ismailow completed his music studies in Fergana in 1973, majoring in bassoon . He started playing guitar at the age of 15 (around 1970).

Ismailov's music is an independent mixture of mainstream jazz , Turkish , Uzbek and Balkan music as well as European classical music . Many of his pieces are in rhythms that are not used in the West, but in Southeastern European and Central Asian music, such as 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, 11/16 and 13/16 measures.

Izmailov has performed extensively in Russia , the rest of the CIS and Western Europe and has taken part in several cross-cultural projects in Eastern Europe. He was the winner of the first European guitarist competition in 1995 in Lausanne . Ukrainian music critics voted him Musician of the Year 1995.
