Floros Floridis
Floros Floridis ( Greek Φλώρος Φλωρίδης , * 1952 in Thessaloniki , Greece ) is a Greek jazz musician and clarinetist whose musical focus is free improvised music .
Life
Floros Floridis studied physics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and then classical clarinet with the Romanian professor Konstantin Ugureanou .
Since the 1970s he has been working as a professional musician in various formations, mainly in the field of free jazz and free improvised music. In 1979 he released the first modern jazz album in Greece with Sakis Papadimitriou : Improvising at Barakos . He played at concerts and festivals in various European countries and in the USA together with Peter Kowald , Conny Bauer , Günter Baby Sommer , Evan Parker , Peter Brötzmann , Carlos Zingaro , Barry Guy , Fred Van Hove , Nicky Skopelitis , Andrew Cyrille , Barre Phillips , Eberhard Weber and other international musicians. He recorded over 25 CDs with the Greek musicians Mihalis Siganidis , Kostas Vomvolos , Savina Yannatou , Andreas Georgiou , Yorgos Dimitriadis and others. From 1986 to 2006 he was a member of the Greek group Imerini Kolimvites (winter swimmers ). He toured internationally with the Black Sea Orchestra , an all-star ensemble from eight countries around the Black Sea .
In 1983 he founded the festival for jazz and improvised music in Thessaloniki and was its director for nine years. From 1995 he worked for two years as a producer for Greek radio. In 1997 he was artistic director of the jazz events of the European Capital of Culture Thessaloniki.
Floridis composes music for short and documentary films, theater and dance. In 2001 he composed the score for the feature film Anna's Summer by Jeanine Meerapfel and in 2004 for the film Faruks Café . Floridis taught saxophone at various schools in Greece and gave courses in improvisation at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 1981 he founded the label jndrecords and after a break of fifteen years revived it as jnd re-records . Floridis is also involved in painting and graphic work, including for record covers and posters.
Floridis lives in Thessaloniki and Berlin.
