Maurice de Martin (born October 1, 1969 in Bad Aibling ) is a German artist , drummer , percussionist , multi-instrumentalist and composer . In addition to his work as a musician, de Martin works with participatory forms of contemporary art and is active as a university lecturer and researcher in the fields of artistic research , transdisciplinarity and improvisation. As a musician he works in crossover projects of avant-garde jazz , new music , improvisation music and Eastern European folklore, but also plays noise , metal , rock and various forms of electronic music. In addition to his instrumental musical work, he works in the context of sound installation and media art.

life and work

De Martin is the son of bass guitarist Bruno de Martin and drummer Anni de Martin. He went to the Musische Pestalozzi-Gymnasium in Munich, where he received lessons in classical piano and music theory. In the early 1990s he played experimental noise rock with the band Brother Virus ( debut album Happy Hour. Live at the Knitting Factory , Enja 1991). From 1991 to 1995 he lived in New York City, where he privately studied drums and improvisation with Joey Baron , Gene Jackson , Sam Ulano and Dennis Charles and was part of the Knitting Factory scene (where he played with Brother Virus in 1989) . During this time he financed himself as a street musician, among other things.

From 1995 he lived as a freelance composer and musician in Berlin, where he also studied music education at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1995 to 1999 . He also studied classical composition with Giya Kancheli . From 1997 to 1999 he traveled to Romania (Transylvania, Transylvania ) with a scholarship from the DAAD and the Berlin Senate, where he continued to study Eastern European folk music, including at the G. Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca . In 1998 he founded the Interzone jazz orchestra with Mircea Tiberian with musicians from Western and Eastern Europe (with whom he recorded several albums) and in 2000 the Berlin Jazz Composers Ensemble . With him he recorded his composition Transsylvaniana , which reflects his folk music research in Transylvania in the late 1990s. He was involved in the release of over 70 albums, which appeared on the labels Enja , Not Two Records , Intuition, Sub Rosa , Zeitkratzer , Karlrecords, Ano Kato, Konnex Records , Meta Records and Laika Records , among others .

Between 2000 and 2005, de Martin was also the drummer in various formations of the Polish “ Yass ” scene, among others together with bassist Olo Walicki , in Adam Pierończyk's Digivocoo project and in the trio of pianist Leszek Możdżer . In Berlin he worked with free jazz bassist Sirone and the Swiss Chapman Stick player Hans Hartmann , as well as internationally with Elliott Sharp , Gary Thomas , Tim Berne , Marc Ducret , John Taylor , Terje Rypdal , Palle Mikkelborg , Melvin Gibbs , Herb Robertson , Iwo Papasow , the Romanian gypsy wedding band Musica de la Marsa and Nana Simopoulos .

In 2000 he joined the Zeitkratzer Ensemble , with whom he recorded music by John Cage , Karlheinz Stockhausen and James Tenney , among others . In the context of this ensemble there were numerous collaborations with protagonists of the contemporary avant-garde, including Laurie Anderson , Alvin Lucier , Arto Lindsay , Keiji Haino , Whitehouse, Carsten Nicolai , Oval, Manuel Göttsching , Terre Thaemlitz , Alvin Curran , She She Pop and Jorinde Voigt . Between 2003 and 2008 he had his own jazz trio 3D with vibraphonist Christopher Dell and bassist Chris Dahlgren , with whom he released two albums on the Krakow label NotTwo.

He also worked as a composer, performer and musical director at the Berlin Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz for productions by director Thomas Ostermeier , as well as for other theater productions in German-speaking countries. From 2008 to 2010 he spent three longer stays in Seoul / South Korea, which led to collaboration with traditional South Korean Samulnori musicians.

From 2009 to 2012 de Martin lived in Switzerland, where he obtained a master's CAP (Contemporary Arts Practice) at the Bern University of the Arts . During this time he was active as a performer and musical director for the Zurich theater group Plasma of the director Lukas Bangerter . Since 2010 he has been a lecturer at the Y Institute for Transdisciplinarity at the Bern University of the Arts. There he also teaches in the departments of theater and research. From 2011 to 2014 de Martin was a member of the Austrian FWF ( Science Fund ) research project Andere räume-knowledge through art , a platform for collaboration between artists and scientists. As part of the Unknown Spaces project , he and the Berlin director Janina Janke researched the headquarters of the United Nations in Vienna, New York City, Nairobi and Geneva. a. cooperates with the Goethe-Institut and UNESCO . From 2012–2016 de Martin was involved in the Berlin-Marzahn urban development in the field of art work in a social context.
