Alvin Curran (born December 13, 1938 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is an American composer.

Life

Curran studied with Elliott Carter . Together with Frederic Rzewski and Richard Teitelbaum and others, he founded the improvisation ensemble Musica Elettronica Viva in 1966 . From 1991 to 2006 he was Darius Milhaud Professor at Mills College .

Curran regularly uses electronic sounds in his music, but also noises from the environment. In 1988, his composition Crystal Psalms was premiered to commemorate the November pogroms in 1938 . Since 1996 he has been working on Inner Cities , a series of solo piano pieces.

On June 19, 2010, Curran performed a work commissioned by the Frankfurt University of Music under the title Maritime Rites at the Schaumainkai on the north bank of the Main in Frankfurt am Main with 100 instrumentalists .

In 2011 Alvin Curran was awarded the Media Convergence Fellowship of the Gutenberg Research College at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and was “Composer in residence” at the Mainz University of Music . In this context, he realized his latest work “Rhinestones” in the rhododendron grove at the 2011 Federal Garden Show in Koblenz, where he designed the final event of the Spektrum Villa Musica of the New Music Network on September 14, 2011.
