history

The idea of collecting different museums was propagated by the then Frankfurt culture department, Hilmar Hoffmann, in the local election campaign in 1977 , after corresponding suggestions had been developed earlier in specialist circles. In 1973, the architect Till Behrens introduced his “ Green Belt-Mainufer-Concept ” to the Frankfurt Forum for Urban Development . Between 1980 and 1990, the existing museums were expanded and new ones built under the leadership of Roland Burgard, who later became the head of the building construction department in Frankfurt . Former patrician villas were partially converted or new buildings designed. Architects such as Richard Meier , Oswald Mathias Ungers , Josef Paul Kleihues , Günter Behnisch and Hans Hollein were responsible for the designs .

The city has been renovating and expanding some of its museums since 2008. The Städel received an extension. The film museum was also renovated. The old buildings of the Historical Museum have also already been reopened.

In October 2007, around 30 Frankfurt museums merged under the word and image brand “Museumsufer Frankfurt”. Similar to “MQ” for the Vienna Museum Quarter or the “ Museum Island” Berlin, this should become an established term for Frankfurt as a museum location. The logo symbolizes the seven bridges that span the Main on the Museum Embankment. With the “Museum Bank Ticket” and the “Museum Bank Card”, the association offers discounts in the 34 participating museums.
