The Swiss road is the main shopping street in Frankfurt district of Sachsenhausen . The one kilometer long street connects the banks of the Main in the north with the western entrances to the south station .

Schweizer Straße was built at the same time as the Untermainbrücke at its northern end in 1871. Up until 1910, mainly late classicist residential and commercial buildings were built on the street and almost 140 trees - mostly plane trees - were planted. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung notes on the street name : "The name has been used since 1877 and is intended to allude to the fact that wealthier citizens were striving towards 'promised Switzerland' on the street at the time."

Public transport was already running on Schweizer Straße at the end of the 19th century . First the horse , then the steam-powered forest railway . Electric trains have been on the road since 1899. Today the tram lines 15, 16 and 19 run, in the south for a short distance also the line 18. The underground lines U1, U2, U3 have been running under the street since 1984 and the U8 line since 2011. The trains stop at Schweizer Platz station .

In summer, Schweizer Straße is the venue for the annual “ Swiss Street Festival ”.
