His work often critically includes socio-political issues such as gender , sexuality , classes , linguistics , ethnic groups and races . Likewise, he often illuminates socio-economic aspects of the commercial music industry in his music or in his lectures and essays . This diversity is reflected in the many production methods of his music - as electroacoustic music , club-oriented deep house music, digital jazz , ambient or glitch as well as neo-expressionist piano works composed by computers. Graphic design, photographs, illustrations and video works also play an important role in Thaemlitz 'work. In 2017 he took part in documenta 14 .

activism

As a chronicler and educator on non-essential transgender topics as well as pansexual , queer homosexuality, Thaemlitz took part in many discussions and lectures in Europe and Japan. Among other things, he organized transcultural workshops in Tokyo's Uplink Factory.

The albums Soil and Tranquilizer released in the early 1990s introduced a "political" form of ambient, which was continued in later releases such as Couture Cosmetique and Means from an End . These albums want to redesign the often passive artist-listener-environment formula. His colleagues included activists from the Ultra-red group . They remixed Thaemlitz's album Still Life with Numerical Analysis (1998) and followed Thaemlitz to the German label Mille Plateaux for the group's first two albums: Second Nature: An Electroacoustic Pastoral (1999) and Structural Adjustments (2000).

Thaemlitz has been a member of the Academy of the Arts in Cologne, which opened in October 2012, since 2013 .

He lives in Kawasaki, Japan .
