The Akademie der Künste der Welt is a cultural institution founded in Cologne in 2012 with an international focus and to which artists and cultural workers - especially non-Europeans - are appointed. It can be traced back to an idea of the writer Navid Kermani and the director of the House of World Cultures, Bernd M. Scherer. The aim of the academy is to promote intercultural dialogue in the arts as a supplement to the existing range of art and culture in the city of Cologne.

History and profile

The idea for the Akademie der Künste der Welt dates back to 2007. It should be founded first in 2009 and then in 2010. Its installation was postponed due to the difficult situation of the municipal budget of the city of Cologne. For the first time , the city council provided one million euros in the 2011 budget for implementation . This sum is updated annually. The project management lay with the former head of the cultural office, Jürgen Noldt, and his successor in office, Konrad Schmidt-Werther. The academy intends to cooperate with existing cultural institutions and existing structures in the city. With the help of a scholarship program, non-European artists, art theorists, art critics and curators in particular are invited to Cologne. Since July 2012 the Akademie der Künste der Welt has been an independent legal entity as a non-profit GmbH.

In 2012, a selection committee made up of Ralph Christoph (strategic director of the pop culture festival c / o pop ), Amelie Deuflhard (director of the Internationale Kulturfabrik Kampnagel ), Kasper König (curator), Jan Krauthäuser (music journalist and DJ), Louwrens Langevoort (director of Cologne Philharmonie ) and Regina Wyrwoll (former General Secretary of the Kunststiftung NRW ) the 14 founding members of the Academy of the Arts of the World: Ali Samadi Ahadi , Galit Eilat , Madhusree Dutta , Monika Gintersdorfer, Tom Holert , Liza Lim , Faustin Linyekula , Hans-Ulrich Obrist , Lemi Ponifasio , Walid Raad , Rosemarie Trockel , Stefan Weidner , Liao Yiwu and Tom Zé . New academy members are appointed by the respective members of the academy. The members have a predominantly non-European artistic background and decide on the selection of the scholarship holders who can then carry out their projects in Cologne. They also determine the program work. Each academician has his own project fund.

In addition to an extensive public event program, the program also includes an artists-in-residence program . Selected fellows can live and work in Cologne for a period of three months to one year . The academy also supports external best practice projects in the fields of migration and non-European art and migration, which are then advertised anew every year. Cultural and scientific institutions as well as artists of all branches and from all over the world can submit their projects, which must be realized in Cologne.

By reducing the annual budget by 40% to the current EUR 600,000, decided by the Cologne City Council in November 2017, the validity of the content of the academy is seriously jeopardized. Some of the academy members have therefore already resigned or have announced such a step.

Fellowship program

As part of the fellowship program , curators, contemporary artists and theorists from non-European countries are invited to Cologne, who are proposed and appointed by the academy members themselves. You can live and work in Cologne for between three and 12 months.

Young Academy

The Young Academy of the Arts of the World, one of the main pillars of the academy and platform for young artists' voices in Cologne, elected the first eleven members in March 2013. They are the pupils and students Arif Baynaz, Isabelle Houben, Marvin Ilonga, Naomi Khimji-Feld, Anna Kozikowski, Gerlin Mabanza, Anna Verena Müller, Walter Guilherme Benjamin Solon, Josephine Stamer, Julian Vethacke and Lena Wontorra. The Young Academy offers adolescents and young adults a creative platform to work together to develop artistic projects on music, dance, theater, literature, painting, visual art, etc. in the Cologne area. It is aimed at 16 to 25 year olds "who want to get involved artistically, socially and politically and who want to organize cultural events. The three guiding principles of the Junge Akademie are presentation of their own work, learning from others and passing on knowledge to others, and networking of the Cologne art scene ".
