Tienchi Martin-Liao (* in Nanjing , China ) is a Chinese author and translator; since 2009 she has been the chairwoman of the PEN Center in Taipei .

Career

Tienchi Liao graduated from Taiwan State University  and came to Germany in the 1970s . She first worked at the Institute for Asian Studies in Hamburg before moving to the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1985 . From 1991 to 2001 she was director of the Richard Wilhelm Translation Center, one of three translation centers for Chinese literature worldwide. From 1994 she published the book series Arcus Chinatexte in Projektverlag (Bochum / Freiburg) - initially together with her husband, the sinologist Helmut Martin , who died in 1999 . This contains works of traditional Chinese literature and philosophy as well as more recent literary texts in German translation.

In 2001, Tienchi Martin-Liao left Germany to work in a leading position for the Laogai  Research Foundation , a  non-profit organization led by Harry Wu that primarily provides information on human rights issues in China, especially conditions in labor camps. During this time, Martin-Liao edited a biography series on political prisoners in China.

Martin-Liao represents the Laogoai Foundation in Europe and was also elected chairman of the independent Chinese PEN Center (ICPC) in 2009. She regularly publishes and comments on political, social and cultural issues in China.

Martin-Liao has been a member of the Academy of the Arts in Cologne, which opened in October 2012, since 2013 .
