Stefan Weidner (* 1967 in Cologne ) is a German scholar of Islam , writer and translator .

Life

Stefan Weidner traveled to North Africa as a schoolboy and made his first experiences with Islam there. He later studied Islamic studies, German literature and philosophy at the Universities of Göttingen , Damascus , Berkeley and Bonn . He works as an author , translator , literary critic . From 2001 until the last issue in 2016 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Fikrun wa Fann , which was published by the Goethe-Institut and wanted to contribute to the dialogue between Western and Islamic cultures. He has translated numerous poets from Arabic, including Adonis and Mahmud Darwish . Weidner has been a founding member of the Academy of the Arts in Cologne since October 2012 .

Weidner is a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry and the writers' association PEN Center Germany . He is an author on Qantara.de and Zeit Online .

His 400-page non-fiction book 1001 Book: The Literatures of the Orient , published in 2019 by Edition Converso, was described as an expert “walk through the centuries of the literatures of the Orient”.
