Stephan Weidner (born May 29, 1963 in Alsfeld ), artist name Der W , is a German music producer , bassist , singer and songwriter . He became known as the bass player and lyricist for the band Böhse Onkelz . The backing group that supports him as a solo artist with live acts and in the studio, also called The W .

Private life

Weidner grew up in Frankfurt am Main until his father left the family in 1966. In 1976 his father moved with him to Hösbach, 50 kilometers to the east in Lower Franconia . Here he dropped out of school without a degree. He lived in Nieder-Ohmen (Mücke) for a few years. Weidner is married for the second time and has a son and a daughter. He lives in Dublin and Ibiza . He was interested in animal welfare at a relatively early age , and according to his own statements, he has been a vegetarian for 24 years. In 2011 he published the song "Meat", in which he denounced the conditions in factory farming.

Musical career

Böhse Onkelz

In 1980 Weidner founded the Böhsen Onkelz together with Kevin Russell and Peter Schorowsky . At first he played the electric guitar . After Matthias “Gonzo” Röhr joined the band in 1981, he took over the bass. In the summer of 2005 the band broke up; In 2014 they got back together.

Northrend Antistars

On May 15, 2006, together with other artists (including Daniel Wirtz from Sub7even ), under the band name Nordend Antistars, he published the pieces Our Stadium - Our Rules and Wins can be played by everyone as stadium anthems for the 2006 World Cup .

Solo career

The W on Tour (2013)

11 April 2008 published Weidner under the name of The W , the single story haters later released from his first solo album two weeks Faster, higher, Weidner . He recorded some songs for it together with the American band Pro-Pain . The debut single story hater entered the singles chart at number 38 and improved to number 19 the following week.

Weidner's solo album was released on March 20, 2009 in a limited edition of 2000 copies on a double vinyl LP . The record also contains three bonus tracks . From March to April 2009 Weidner went on tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The opening act was the Danish rock band DAD , the American metal band Pro-Pain and the German hard rock band Skew Siskin . His live band included Rupert Keplinger, Dirk Czuya, Henning Menke and JC Dwyer.

From May 2009 to August 2009 appearances at various festivals such as the Wacken Open Air 2009 and the offshoots Wacken Rocks South, Wacken Rocks Seaside and Wacken Rocks Berlin, as well as the Open Airs With Full Force , Woodstage and Rock Head. He was also on stage in December 2009 as support for Motörhead on their Germany tour, where he took over the guitar after Rupert Keplinger's departure. In November 2009, a tour film and a live recording of the concert was in Berlin's Columbia Hall of 23 April 2009 as a double DVD called A to W published. The DVD also includes a live CD . In the same year, Weidner received an Echo nomination in the category artist / group / collaboration - rock / alternative .

On December 3, 2010 his second album was released with the title Autonomie! He got support from singer Yen ( YEN ) and Motörhead drummer Mikkey Dee. Stephan Weidner said of his texts in an interview with Pressure Magazine as follows: “I just see myself as someone who thinks about himself, about his life and what he sees and communicates. What people do with my lyrics is completely up to them. I don't see myself as a warning, nor do I have the ambition to make the world a better place, I just live as I see fit and I could imagine that one or the other would be interested. ”October 19, 2012 Weidner's third solo album III was released and his fourth album IV followed on March 18, 2016 .

Weidner recorded the guitar riffs for the Dance-2-Trance title Remember Exxon Valdez (album: Moon Spirits ) in 1992 . With Pro-Pain he recorded the song Godspeed for the album Fistful of Hate in 2004 and Hour of the Time for the album No End in Sight in 2008 , in which he sings the choruses. In 2004 he wrote the lyrics to the song Earlier under a pseudonym for Peter Maffay , later on his album Laut und leise .

On the 2006 album LoveChainsNRockets by Sub7even he took over the background vocals in the song F *** About . Furthermore, Weidner is represented as a guest singer on the 2009 album Eschenbach by the band of the same name on the songs Black Holes , Mach's gut and Halt . 2014 he sang with Toxpack the title Nothing to see hear say their album Eat! .

After he had already produced a large part of the Onkelz albums and founded the label Rule23 Recordings , he first worked for another band in 2000 and produced their debut album of the same name for the band Suprasod . With Sub7even, who appeared with the Onkelz in 2001, he produced their third album LoveChainsNRockets in 2006 . In the same year he produced the single Unser Stadion - our rules . Weidner has been producing the band Eschenbach since 2008 .

Away from the music

After Weidner had already started and supported various social projects with his band Böhse Onkelz (including concerts for the victims of right-wing extremist violence and relief operations in Peru and Afghanistan ), he will continue to do so after the band has ended. Together with the Bremen sociologist Cornelius Peltz, he founded the Voice vs. Violence , which aims to convey to young people that violence and hatred pave the wrong way. In February 2008, Weidner founded his own fashion label W-Couture , which sells t-shirts and sweatshirts.
