Onkelz wie wir… is the third studio album by the German rock band Böhse Onkelz . It was released in August 1987 and was released by Metal Enterprises . In terms of lyrics, the band finally turned their backs on the skinhead scene with this album , which is expressed in the song "Memories". The album sold around 16,000 times at the time of publication. The sound carrier was re-recorded in 2005 and re-released in 2007.

History of origin

After their old contract with Rock-O-Rama expired, the band looked around for a new contract. Shortly afterwards the Onkelz signed a contract with Ingo Nowotny's label "Metal Enterprises". Nowotny got to know the band while recording at the MTV Studio in Frankfurt. But shortly after signing the contract, there were differences between Stephan Weidner and Ingo Nowotny, as he tried to shape the band according to his ideas.

Cover design

Cover of the new recording

The original cover shows a picture of the four band members, above which are the band and album names in black letters on a white background. The photo was taken by Stefan Witzel. The cover of the new recording is very simple: the Böhsen Onkelz's standard lettering is on a white background and the title Onkelz wie wir underneath . At the top right there is a red stamp with the words Neuaufnahme der Original from 1987 .

Video

There was also a VHS studio video for this album, which also featured Onkelz's first music video clip, Von Glas zu Glas . The VHS has not yet been reissued and is considered a collector's item. The video clip for From Glass to Glass shows Peter Schorowsky , who gets drunk with his bandmates and finds a female guest more and more attractive. The video itself contains studio recordings and some short clips. Stefan Witzel took over the camera and editing .

Background information on individual songs

memories

For many years, memories has been the last song played at all Onkelz concerts (except for the farewell tour La Ultima 2004, as well as Vaya con Tioz 2005 and "Nothing is for Eternity" 2014). The title of the song alternates between "memories" and "memories" even on official releases. The piano was recorded by Stefan Witzel, the photographer of the cover motif.

Bomber pilot

According to the band, the song was written as an anti-war song that is said to describe the war as absolute madness. Because of the martial-looking text, however, it is often interpreted as glorifying war . The band admitted that they deliberately wanted to provoke with the piece. Critics often mentioned that the title was sung by some perpetrators during the riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen in 1992.

False prophets

The song has the basic message that you shouldn't follow anyone but yourself. As an ironic alternative way, happiness in "drinking and listening to uncle" is touted.

! (Speed)

The song is the Böhsen Onkelz's first ever instrumental piece. The title is given on the official website of the Onkelz as “Speed”, on the album as “!”. It's an approach to Thrash and Speed Metal these days.

Republication

The album was re-released on November 2, 2007. Because the rights of the original recording were not with Onkelz, but with Metal Enterprises, all songs on the album were re-recorded and released with a new cover.

On December 4, 2009, a remastered version of the original recordings from 1987 was re-released as "Onkelz Wie Wir (Black Edition)" by Reflex Distribution & Media (Intergroove), which had previously acquired the rights from Metal Enterprises.

Thomas Kupfer from Rock Hard rated the new recording in 2007 with seven out of ten possible points. He writes "if you already have the original version of" Onkelz wie wir "on your shelf, you don't necessarily have to access it when you re-record the album". Nevertheless, "the overall sound has been greatly improved", while the "rumbling charm of the original" has been retained.

The new entry from 2007 was rated seven out of ten possible points on cdstarts.de . The author Matthias Reichel describes the "sound powerful, clear and still rough". The Onkelz had finally recorded their "all-time classics like" Memories "," Bomberpilot "and" Dick + Durstig "in an adequate sound image".

The Pressure Magazine gave the new recording in 2007 five of six possible points. The newly recorded songs are musically at a high level, whereby the Onkelz “stayed very close to the original and just gave the whole thing a fresh coat of paint”, which is why “the wind of the eighties would blow strongly through the album”.
