Fikrun wa Fann / Art and Thought was a cultural journal first published in 1963 for dialogue with the Islamic world , which was published by the association Inter Nationes eV until 2000 . After the association merged with the Goethe-Institut , the publisher was known as the Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes for two years, from 2003 until the magazine was discontinued in 2016, only the Goethe-Institut.

The first editor-in-chief was the art historian and journalist Albert Theile . Together with the orientalist Annemarie Schimmel , he was responsible for the magazine up to issue No. 37 (1982). Her successor was the Islamic scholar Erdmute Heller, who was followed in 1988 by the journalist Rosemarie Höll. This shaped the magazine for the following 12 years up to issue no. 74. In 2001, Höll was replaced by the translator and literary critic Stefan Weidner , who was previously associated with the editorial team as an author.

The reason for Höll's dismissal lay in the new direction of the magazine planned by the Goethe-Institut. Stefan Weidner wrote in 2002 on the internet portal qantara.de : "The events of September 11, 2001 and the consequences pose completely new tasks and challenges for a magazine like Fikrun wa Fann." The change in the editorial management meant that issue no. 75, which had already been completed by Rosemarie Höll, was no longer allowed to appear. Instead, issue 75 was re-produced with other authors under the direction of Stefan Weidner.

Fikrun wa Fann was a cultural and political magazine . She pursued aesthetic issues and provided information about art and culture in Germany and the Islamic world. Another focus was on current socio-political debates. With authors from Germany and the Islamic world, the magazine was a forum for information and dialogue with and within Islamic cultures.

The free magazine was published twice a year in Arabic , English and Persian . It was intended for cultural institutes, intermediary organizations, libraries and universities, which made it accessible to a broader audience, especially in countries with a predominance of Islam, as well as for people who were active in the cultural or journalistic field and thus had a multiplier function.

The online portal offered additional articles on the main topics of the printed magazine in Arabic, German and English at shorter intervals and underlined the dialogic principle of the publication with its offers. The maintenance and updating of the website ended at the same time as the last print edition (No. 105) in autumn 2016. A large part of the articles in the last editions can be found in four language versions on the magazine's website.
