The University of Damascus ( Arabic جامعة دمشق, DMG Ǧāmiʿat Dimašq ) is a state university in Damascus and with over 85,000 students and 2,000 academic staff the largest university in Syria .
history
Damascus University is the oldest university in the country. It was created in 1923 through the merger of a medical school (founded in 1903) and a law school (founded in 1913). Until the University of Aleppo was founded in 1958, it was known as the Syrian University and, according to its website, is now divided into 19 faculties. The individual departments are housed in buildings on both sides of Filasteen-Straße in the center of Neustadt.
